Blond curly hair, Blue eyes. 5’7 with a thin frame and perfect features. She is prone to angry outbursts and self-harming behaviors. She is manipulative and tends to act without thinking. Erin Jenner is the oldest of two children. She had always tried to protect her sister, Karen while they were growing up. She was more like a mother than a sister. So when she became addicted to drugs and alcohol, her younger sister didn’t hesitate to return the favor. But Karen’s refusal to let go is likely to pull her deeper into her own darkness.

EXCERPT:

I picked Erin up in front of the small house she rented from a man I assumed to be a slumlord. The bushes stretched out like wild fingers grasping for anything brave enough to wander by and the grass could hit the back of my knees. If I didn't know any better, I would have assumed the house was abandoned. My sister was standing on the front porch with a cigarette between thin lips, long oily blond hair hung in her face, blocking her pale blue eyes. It saddened me to see her like that, such a pretty girl. She flung the butt into the grass and I worried that the yard would burst into flames.

"Hey." She climbed in and stared at me.

"Hey," I spoke back, shifting the car into drive and headed south. I could have made a comment about the condition of her yard or her messy appearance but those are hostile subjects. "How are you?" I fought through the awkward silence. It was hard to find anything to say to her anymore.

It’s unbelievable the darkness she inspired. I couldn’t even remember when it started, when the mental illness took hold of her and killed the beautiful little girl with a toothy grin she used to be. There once was a time when she would sing me songs when I was afraid. She helped me with my homework, hid with me and took beatings for me. Those memories made me forever indebted to her. I looked at her again and tried to see her, the person I loved, but she was being devoured by the sickness and any trace of that bright young girl was gone.
